They remain evergreen perennials throughout most of Australia but in areas of hard frost should be treated as annuals. Apply a preventative broad-spectrum fungicide drench seven to 10 days after transplanting. SuperCal are very early to flower (in central California they bloom in late February), but under low-light conditions they will benefit from supplemental lighting. You can enjoy a continuous procession of flowers from spring to frost without a lot of effort. Provide periodic clear water applications if excess soluble salts accumulate. They have a super strong root system so will cope well in stressful situations. We never had to deadhead the plants – EVER. SuperCal Petchoas even have superior mildew resistance. For the end user, the good news is they performed exceptionally well in high heat and direct sun! The claim of self-cleaning was evident in our trials throughout the summer.

The advantage for growers is the SuperCal’s can be grown cool, so that’s a nice energy savings.

Our unusually hot and dry summer really put this series to the test, and I must say we were very pleased with the overall results.

We conducted a thorough container trial of the SuperCal’s this summer at our facility here in Rochester, NY. Examples: Large showy flowers (petunia genetics), non-sticky leaves (Calibrachoa), flower power (both), tolerance to high soil pH (petunia), self-cleaning plants (both), excellent performance in both cool and warm environments (both). What makes them a value is that the cross brings the best characteristics of each genus to the series, and pretty much gets rid of the icky traits. What makes SuperCal unique is that they’re a genetic cross between the Petunia and Calibrachoa genera. Now that the growing season has begun for next spring, it’s definitely worth revisiting the SuperCal series as they continue to grow in demand and popularity. We carry this fantastic product at our Kaw Valley Garden Centers.Last winter I wrote a blog post about this relatively new genus and series. A cross between a Petunia and Calibrachoa, the Petchoa Supercal series combines the best characteristics of each. It's safe enough to be used for organic growing, and we have seen excellent results. If you have problems with budworms (blooms and buds getting chewed away) we recommend Captain Jack's Deadbug Brew. Supercal cultivars are very early flowering and heat tolerant with awesome flower power! Taking the large flowers and less ph-sensitivity of petunias (which causes calibrachoas to turn yellow in regular topsoil) and the flower power of calibrachoas, the SuperCals provide amazing color throughout the summer and fall.
